Several of ������Ƶ’s faculty and staff members submitted work to the Kansas State Fair in the Professional Art and Photography Division.

������Ƶ Art Instructor Steve Dudek was awarded a third place for his watercolor called “Golden Koi,” of Japanese Koi fish.

Director of Student Life Diane Engle, who is also a ������Ƶ watercolor student, was awarded a Kansas State Fair Merit award for her watercolor painting “The Black Pearl.”

������Ƶ will host an opening reception for its new exhibit “Fire,” by Cheyenne artist Bently Spang from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 in the Shafer Art Gallery. The exhibit will run through Nov. 6.

Paige Crocker, freshman in theatre education, has known her destiny since seventh grade.

“I auditioned for my first show and I was hooked,” she said. “I just love the raw emotion I feel while acting. I felt like I could both be more myself and be another person, and I could make the audience believe and wonder… and make them dream.”

Crocker says she considers herself seasoned, but she said her role in “Going to See the Elephant” has been a fresh experience and a new challenge.

Agriculture and Labor ��

Labor Day in the U.S. marks the official end of summer and a transition to more indoor activities. For many it means things are slowing down a bit and thoughts start to turn towards the holiday season. While that may be true for much of the country, for those in Kansas agriculture, and depending on the weather, it’s just another day in the office.��

������Ƶ will host a “Meet and Greet” for its new Vice President, Dr. Robin Garrett from 4-5 p.m. September 14 at the Shafer Art Gallery, which is located in the Fine Arts Building. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

������Ƶ Lead Paramedic Instructor Dean A. Dexter was recently recognized by the Board of Directors of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for achieving 30 consecutive years as a Nationally Registered Paramedic (NRP).�� This national distinction is an honor held by few paramedics.

������Ƶ and the Center for Adult Education will be closed and there will be no classes in observance of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 7.�� Offices will reopen and classes will resume on Sept. 8.

With a smile a mile wide, former Foundation Director Darnell Holopirek fought back grateful tears as hand after hand shot up in the audience to pledge money in honor of Holopirek and her husband, Mel, during the 37^th annual Big Benefit Auction on August 22.

Planting the Next Crop of Farmers

The official end of summer in Kansas is really the start of school.�� Most public schools are now in session and ������Ƶ started this past Wednesday.�� The next “crop” of students has started on the formal journey of becoming professionals in agriculture while some are in their sophomore year.�� It might be a bit of a stretch but let’s compare education and agriculture.
